Lookup Newton County Inmate Records

Newton County inmate records are accessed through local custody contacts, public-records requests, state correctional databases, court records, and notification tools. The official county pages found for Newton County publish jail contact, visiting, bonding, clothing, commissary, and records-request information, but they do not publish a confirmed local online jail roster for searching current detainees. A Newton County jail roster search therefore starts with the county jail and then moves through the right fallback channel for the person's custody status.

No Official Newton County Online Jail Roster Was Found

The most important local finding is negative but useful: official Newton County, Indiana sources reviewed during research did not show a public online inmate roster, booking report, recent-bookings list, or searchable Newton County Jail profile page. The official Newton County Jail page gives jail phone, fax, visitation, bond, clothing, and commissary rules, but it does not link to a current roster. The Newton County Sheriff's Department page links jail and public-records services, not a confirmed roster.

That does not mean Newton County keeps no booking records. The sheriff corrections job description says jail staff photograph or videotape detainees, take fingerprints, enter required information into the Jail Records Management System, receipt money and property, start classification, start medical screening, process bonding, maintain logs, and answer certain detainee-status questions. The difference is that these are jail records and internal operating records, not a published online county roster with confirmed public fields.

Practical starting point: for current custody, call Newton County Jail at (219) 474-3999. For copies of jail, booking, or police records, use the sheriff APRA form.

Step-by-Step Lookup and Fallback Chain

Use the channel that matches the situation. Same-day custody is different from a filed court case, a state-prison sentence, a federal hold, or an immigration detention question.

  1. Call Newton County Jail at (219) 474-3999 for immediate custody, visiting, bond, and jail-lobby questions.
  2. Call the sheriff department at (219) 474-3331 during Monday-Friday office hours for records routing or APRA questions.
  3. Use Newton County Communications Center non-emergency administration at 219-474-5661 for non-emergency routing to a department employee. Call 911 only for emergencies.
  4. Go in person to the sheriff and jail facility at 304 E Seymour St, Kentland, IN 47951 when a lobby or records request needs local handling.
  5. Submit the Newton County Sheriff's Office public-records request when the question is about copies of booking, corrections, police report, photo CD, audio, or related records.
  6. Search the Indiana Department of Correction incarcerated search if the person has been sentenced and moved into IDOC custody.
  7. Use Indiana VINELink for custody or case notification when notification is the goal.
  8. Search Indiana MyCase for court records after charges are filed. MyCase is not the jail roster.
  9. Use the BOP inmate locator for sentenced federal prisoners, and contact the U.S. Marshals Service Northern District of Indiana for federal pretrial routing when appropriate.
  10. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System for immigration custody searches by A-number and country of birth or biographical details.

Portal and Search-Field Inventory

The public portal situation is mixed. INjail Public Access is an Indiana county jail portal, but Newton County participation was not confirmed in the research. IDOC, by contrast, was inspected as the official sentenced-state-prison locator. Use INjail only as a possible future portal reference unless a Newton County result is confirmed. Use IDOC when the person is in state correctional custody.

APRA Request Route for Booking and Jail Records

Newton County Sheriff's Office says public-records requests must use the sheriff APRA form and that no other forms will be accepted. The county cites Indiana APRA, IC 5-14-3, and warns that requests must identify the record with particularity. Broad wording such as "any and all" or attempts to vacuum data may be denied or delayed.

For jail records, choose the Corrections department checkbox when the requested material concerns booking, detainee, jail, or inmate records. Choose Investigations when the request is for police investigative or incident material. If the request does not fit the listed incident checkboxes, use the Other line to describe the specific record, such as "booking record for the full name on or about the approximate date."

Submission channels include in person, mail, and email as listed on the county records page. The scanned form also lists fax at (219) 474-3333. Fees include $8.00 for each police report, photo CD, or audio recording requested for non-law-enforcement or non-governmental use, plus standard copy charges of $0.10 per page or direct cost for other reproductions. Payment for records fees is by money order, certified check, or exact cash; credit cards are not accepted for records-copy fees.

Sample Internal Booking Field Inventory

Because Newton County did not publish a roster profile, no public county sample record can be described as confirmed. The official corrections job description still confirms categories of information and workflow records that are created or maintained inside the jail. Treat these as internal or requestable record categories subject to APRA limits, not as fields guaranteed to appear on a public web profile.

County Jail vs. DOC, Federal, and ICE Custody

Newton County Jail is the local detention facility for people arrested by the sheriff's office and local agencies, people awaiting court action, people serving local jail sentences, and people awaiting transfer when applicable. IDOC is the state sentenced-prison system. BOP is federal prison custody. ICE ODLS is immigration detention lookup. A person may move among systems, so a failed search in one database does not prove the person was never arrested or never held.

Newton County Jail Visitation Schedule

The jail uses HomeWAV for phone and online visitation. The official jail page says visitors for phone and online visits must register at least 24 hours in advance, visits are limited to 30 minutes, identification is required, onsite visits remain limited to one per week, and visitors under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. No weekend visitation schedule was published in the official jail page reviewed during research.

That source is central to inmate-record access because it explains the required form, request particularity, fees, and submission channels.

The Indiana Department of Correction incarcerated search is the statewide locator for sentenced prisoners after county jail custody no longer controls the record.

Use the IDOC source only for state correctional custody. It should not be treated as a current Newton County Jail roster.

Sheriff App, Tips, and Final Lookup Cautions

The Newton County Sheriff Indiana app exists in the Apple App Store and Google Play. Store listings describe public safety news, communication with residents, crime reporting, tips, and other interactive features. The listings reviewed did not advertise a confirmed jail roster or inmate lookup feature, so the app should be treated as a news and tip tool unless the sheriff later publishes a roster feature.

A newly arrested person may not appear in MyCase right away because court filing follows arrest and booking. A person who was in Newton County Jail and is no longer there may have bonded out, been released, transferred to IDOC, moved to another county, moved into federal custody, or become subject to immigration custody. The correct record source changes with that movement. For same-day status, the jail phone line remains the most direct local route.

Confirm before acting: verify custody, bond, visiting, and money rules with Newton County Jail before traveling, sending funds, or assuming a database result is current.
